Is it possible to separate the NPM and NTA Database

So we're looking to do a fresh install of Solarwinds on brand new shiny servers (well virtual machines). We currently have two servers, one for the NPM & NTA install and the second for the database. We are looking to install NPM and NTA on a new server and the databases of NPM & NTA on separate servers. So in total we'll have three servers, one running NPM & NTA, one running the NPM database and the other running NTA database.

So firstly, is there much point in this? (I've already been told that it won't make any differences if  VMs are in play, is this true?)

Secondly if there is point in doing it, is there a way to separate the current database for migration sake? At the moment it seems to be just one big database for both.

Any help or advice would be great, thanks.
