AppInsight for SQL - Can it cause performance degradation, deadlocks, or other sql issues? Overhead cost?

I heavily believe in using monitoring to view the state of all our SQL databases and resolving the performance issues that are found.  But what happens when other systems people or DBAs claim monitoring is the cause of the performance issues (slow, deadlocks, etc).

How do you go about checking to see if your performance monitoring (Appinsight for SQL monitors) are causing the supposed "deadlocks" or performance degradation?

From my viewing of all our monitoring and performance of the servers and databases I cannot see any "smoking guns", to refute the vague but plausible notion that monitoring is a cause or additional factor leading to more issues.

Any help is appreciated as I would like to either identify if this is actually going on or put this question to rest.

If anyone has any performance numbers or overhead cost of running AppInsight for SQL monitors, that would also be appreciated.

Thanks
