We are getting ready to start implementing alerts based on Memory, CPU and Disk. That being the case, we are planning to use the "out of the box" alerts contained within SAM: Settings\Alerts & Reports\Manage Alerts
Our server environment is a mix of VMWare VMs and physicals and we want to make sure we are applying the "right" set of alerting based on the make-up of the server.
Within the list of alerts there are utlization alerts that note "HOST" and "VM". Does this mean that we should use the alerts named "HOST" for physical nodes and VM for virtual nodes?
example:
Host CPU Utilization vs High VM CPU Utilization
Host Memory Utilization vs High VM CPU Utilization
OR can either alert apply to a physical or VM server? What is the difference? We want to know if we need to define two rules, one alert for physicals and one for virtuals OR can one alert apply for either a physical or virtual? If one alert will work, which alert would we use: the one noted as "host" or the one noted as vm - if so, what factor(s) within the single alert help determine if it is a physical or virtual-based node so it gets monitored correctly?
Getting this right is critical to phase 2 of our solar winds implementation...any assistance regarding this topic would be greatly appreciated!
