- What was life like before using SolarWinds? (Include what you were using and why you decided it was time for a change)
For network management we used Rancid and Cacti open source software on a Linux box. This server also had a syslog server, which we only manually reviewed when there was a problem. Very little proactive monitoring other than ping checks for devices. When there were issues we had little information to guide troubleshooting or determine a root cause. - Which SolarWinds product(s) saved your bacon?
We recently implemented NPM, NTA and NCM. Two days ago we had a high load on our MPLS network that was causing email and critical applications to timeout. With NPM and NTA we were able to identify that an accounting application was stuck in a loop and loading down the MPLS. - Did you consider other options, and why did you choose SolarWinds?
SolarWinds was the easiest setup and best user interface. The preloaded graphs and ability to drill down in detail was far superior to any tool we tried. - How has life been since you've rolled out SolarWinds in your environment?
Network management has become not only productive, but fun. Seeing detailed data has enabled us to become proactive as well as perform post-mortem's on incidents and come up with long term solutions instead of fighting fires.
