SolarWinds is starting to make a massive, positive impact in my current environment. New teams are adding devices everyday, features are constantly being discovered, and utilized. What I would like to discuss is how does one optimize the application ? How do I determine what is causing a majority of the stress on the platform ? I have started at a very basic level on removing any action, resource, or thing that is not actively being used in a production sense. Some examples of those things are:
- Views: I have removed all views that are not being used. I started with the copys and worked my way down.
- Alerts: Any alert that was not being acted on was turned off. Do alerts that are turned off play a part in any of the SQL queries ? If so, I would like to delete some of the sub-par alerts.
- Groups: I have encountered many groups that provide nothing other than a logical grouping. They are not used in Alerts and no one acts on them. These groups have been removed.
Anyone else have any advice on the removal of "low hanging fruit" ?
The other topic which gets a little more technical (at least for me ) is the discussion of logs. Can I look at logs to determine what is being over utilized ?
- Business layer logs, what can I determine from this ?
- Orion Web Log, what can I determine from this ?
Am I even on the right track ? Any advice, and or direction would be greatly appreciated.
